What Is Rakuten, and Can You Order from It in Thailand?
Rakuten is an online mall holding tens of thousands of Japanese shops under one site. What it sells, how its prices and shipping fees work, and what to do if you want to order it from Thailand.
What is Rakuten?
Rakuten is one of Japan's largest online malls, gathering tens of thousands of shops under a single site — closer to a shopping centre than to one store.
The thing to understand first is that Rakuten does not sell to you itself. It rents the floor space, and every product page belongs to a different merchant with its own domestic shipping fee, dispatch time and conditions.
Order three things from three merchants and you have placed three orders. They arrive in three boxes on three different days, not as one shipment.
What people order from Rakuten most
The deepest categories are food and snacks, cosmetics, homeware, small appliances, clothing, sports equipment and collectables.
The other draw is anything a brand makes for the Japanese market alone: limited editions, flavours and scents that are never exported, and seasonal bundles. Those rarely appear on the brand's international site.
Second-hand goods are thinner here than on a dedicated resale app, because most sellers on Rakuten are real shops selling new stock.
How prices and domestic shipping work
Prices on Rakuten sit close to Japanese retail, but the same item can cost different amounts at different merchants, because each sets its own. Comparing two or three shops before you decide is usually worth the minute.
The part most people miss is domestic shipping, charged per merchant rather than per order. Some ship free above a threshold, others price by destination region — and it always lands in the real cost.
Rakuten also runs several big sale periods a year. If you are not in a hurry, waiting for one usually beats the standing price by a useful margin.
Can you order from Rakuten yourself in Thailand?
You cannot. Almost every Rakuten merchant delivers to Japanese addresses only, and checkout expects a Japanese card or payment method, so most attempts stop at the address form.
The one route that works is having someone in Japan place the order and receive it, then forward it to Thailand — which is what a proxy buying service like Tama-Chan does.
Ordering from Rakuten through Tama-Chan
Tama-Chan can order from Rakuten for you. Copy the link to the product page and send it to an admin on LINE; the team checks the item price and that merchant's domestic shipping fee, then quotes you a baht total before you commit.
Once ordered, the goods go to our warehouse in Japan and wait there until everything on your list has arrived, then ship home together in one consignment — far cheaper than sending box by box, especially when several merchants are involved.
Fees and freight rates are on the service fee table, and the other sites we buy from are in the Japanese shop directory.
